Most metals will become dull and tarnish over time, quality metals such as Sterling Silver, 14K Gold Fill, and Brass can always be restored back to their original finish.General Tips:
- Apply all your cosmetics and perfumes then allow them time to dry before putting on your jewelry.
- Moisture and humidity will speed up the oxidation process that causes tarnishing, so store your items in a cool dry place, preferably in an airtight container or ziploc baggie.
- Take off jewelry before taking a shower, going in the pool or hot tub etc.
- A jewelry polishing cloth (shown below), can be found in any jewelry department and will restore a brilliant shine to your piece.
- Wipe gently and let the cloth do the work. You can also use the cloth on designs with an antique finish, just be sure to clean only the "high polish" areas or the chemicals in the cloth may remove some of the antiquing.
- For removing heavy tarnishing on sterling silver items line a glass bowl with aluminum foil (or use an aluminum pan). Add two tablespoons of baking soda and about a cup of boiling water. Carefully submerge the sterling silver and stir. Let sit until bright. Rinse with cool water and dry with a soft cloth.
